top ten tv theme songs (or, amy learns how to embed, graduates to leet blogging)

okay, so we all know that "suicide is painless" is a classic piece of both music and television history; that it's super cutting edge that house opens to that massive attack tune; that the theme music to danger bay was truly epic; and that if the opening credits of the insanely brilliant re-imagined battlestar galactica don't give you shivers then you're completely dead inside.

but let's face it, aren't the greatest tv theme songs the ones that make you want to sing along? or at least call up your friends while you're drunk to see if they can help you remember the words? and weren't they all from the 80s, when tv was all shiny and new, and sitcoms still had laugh tracks and tried to teach us family values?

  1. golden girls - this had to be number one, considering that this list was inspired by two days of marathon golden girls watching at the hotel in duluth (see below post for more details). i just want to thank them all for being a friend! it also makes me want to change number 5 on the list of things about me to "my favourite golden girl is rose".

  2. fresh prince of bel air - i don't know if anyone else has discovered this, but this song makes a perfect medley with "mary jane's last dance" when drunkenly played on a guitar (seriously - try it at your next party!) this is also basically the only time it's acceptable for a white girl to rap (and even this is debatable).

  3. who's the boss - i remember when this used to rerun at 7pm every night, and my friend jill and i used to sneak back into my house during our nightly neighbourhood hide-and-seek sessions, watch the episode, then go back out and make fun of everyone for not being able to find us while we were "hiding." i'm surprised they couldn't hear us singing along to the theme song all the way down the street.

  4. family ties - before who's the boss at 7, there was family ties at 6:30, just in time to watch while my mom, my sister and I were eating our meatloaf (later, much, much, later, when erin and i were both back living at home for whatever reason, it was breaker high, but that's another -- far more embarrassing -- story for another time). my favourite part (other than the theme song, obvs) was the "sit, ubu, sit. good dog!" at the end, followed by the little "woof!" ps, how awesome was it when justine bateman was on arrested development (rip) for those few episodes? it made me love jason bateman even more to see him helping out his sister like that.

  5. perfect strangers - i hated this show when i was younger, but somehow ended up watching it all the time. i think it was mostly for the "staaaaaanging taaaaall... on the wings of my dreeeeeeams..." followed by that little harmonica part before the upbeat little outtro.

  6. full house - up until really recently, i thought rod stewart sang this song. maybe he does, who knows? plus i had such a huuuuuge crush on uncle jesse (who ps, has aged incredibly well), and was so completely sad when he married becky.

  7. growing pains - when my friend jeff and i were first fusing our collective vast and complex knowledge of 80s tv themes songs into one cheesy (and possibly sentient) super-being, this was the only one we couldn't quite remember, even though it was right there on the tip of our vodka-soaked tongues... i can't remember which one of our friends it was who answered our drunken message and actually sang it to us over the phone, but if i did, i would totally hug them.

  8. cheers - this one would be totally so much higher on the list, being one of those seriously iconic songs (which i always thought was sung by woody harrelson... maybe he does, who knows?) if it hadn't recently been turned into a kelsey's commercial. and don't get me wrong, i love kelsey's and their ridiculously delicious buffalo chicken sandwiches, but i think it takes away from the tv-theminess of it (although now i totally want to do another top ten list with my favourite commercial jingles!)

  9. the littlest hobo - i know this one is a little different, but i think it's an important addition to a list that is severely lacking in both canadian content, and puppies. and who didn't want to be one of the new friends he made at every stop?!

  10. the facts of life - okay, i'll admit it, i saw this show again recently, and it was pretty bad. i mean, it really sucked. but the theme song is so relentlessly catchy and upbeat, it's hard to keep hating. but this youtube clip is really all you need to watch.

places to be

... if you want to hang out with me and my awesome book, what boys like, available soon at a bookstore near you...

  1. draft 5.1 (blue moon pub, toronto). october 4th, 2009. 4pm. (with the lovely rebecca rosenblum. whose super cool blog is in the original template that i chose for listophelia, but then rejected when i realized that it had not only already been done, but already been done better).
  2. tinars book launch (gladstone hotel, toronto). october 20th, 2009. 7pm. be there. seriously. it's going to be catastrophic in the most beautiful and perfect kind of way. there might not actually be glow sticks and gogo dancers (sorry matthew and adrienne, i know i promised...) but there will be food and music and drinks and me all dressed up and probably saying ridiculous things that will embarrass my parents. and isn't that equally if not more awesome than gogo dancers?
  3. ottawa writers' festival (st. brigid's centre, ottawa). october 25th, 2009. 8:30pm. come for ian rankin. stay for me, and alexandra leggatt, lisa foad, and m.a.c. farrant.
  4. pivot reading series (toronto). november 18th, 2009. that's all i know.
  5. strong words (gladstone hotel, toronto). january 5th, 2010. that's next year, which under normal circumstances would make it entirely beyond my realm of comprehension. but ever since i started getting paid vacation, i've actually been starting to re-train my brain to think in terms of years. well, okay. maybe months.
  6. litlive (somewhere in hamilton). february 7th, 2010. this is in hamilton, so i'm assuming afterward i will be heading to hooters for some wings and then passing out while spooning with briscoe on heather and scott's couch. just a guess.
  7. some other events which i will post here as soon as i hear about them. and you guys who are all reading this will leave many, many comments telling me how great i am and how you are all coming to see me read/get interviewed/get drunk at various locations around southern ontario, and maybe even halifax. comments, yo. comments!

thirty three awesome things i've done since turning thirty three

so it's been a week, and while the earth hasn't shattered or anything (in the back of my mind, i'll admit i totally thought turning 33 on 09.09.09 would result in some monumental, world-changing event, numerologically speaking -- and no, kanye west's outburst at the vmas does not count), there have been some pretty great moments.

  2. several of these might possibly be (or contribute to) the reason that the entire dalhousie theatre department made it onto my revenge list.
  3. the entire list might be (or contribute to) the reason that i was failing macroeconomics 1102.
  4. i was pretty funny back in 1995.

top ten greatest lines from canadian heritage commercials

back in the day, we would play drinking games based on how many of these lines we could could come up with. who said history can't be fun? extra points if you know the line that comes next. otherwise... drink!

  1. "no one's going to read a comic about a strong man in tights, joe! it'll never fly!"
  2. "pa ain't gonna make it!"
  3. "canada be damned! i'm going to the klondike!"
  4. "but i'm sure it means... the houses... the village!"
  5. "fishes enough to feed this kingdom... oh, sire... until the end of time!"
  6. "both of you know i cannot read a word!"
  7. "doctor! i smell... burnt toast!
  8. "but i need these peach baskets back!"
  9. "jacques, you can't see down with that thing!"
  10. "if you do not bring this classroom under control. i am going to repeat every word of this disgusting lecture to your charming wife!"
i'm especially pleased that every single one of these ends with an exclamation mark. although i'm pretty sure that i'm going to get a slew of angry emails about my blatant omission of patrick o'neill.

daily dose of listalgia

at some point, i also apparently spilled some kind of smelly crap all over this journal. this may or may have been more upsetting to me than the coffee-spilling incident.

a list of things related to this photograph

  1. this is lenny.
  2. before i adopted lenny and his brother carl, they were called zeus and zorro. i never knew which one was zeus, and which one was zorro.
  3. lenny loved potato chips.
  4. lenny also loved sleeping in dale's guitar case. i was never supposed to tell dale this.
  5. lenny was cross-eyed and possibly mentally retarded. he also drooled when you pet him, and peed on the bed when you left him alone for too long.
  6. lenny always won every wrestling match with carl.
  7. today is the three-year anniversary of the day i had to put lenny down. i still miss him.

top ten reasons i would totally rule on jeopardy!

  1. i'm really quick with a buzzer.
  2. i'd have a super interesting anecdote to tell alex after the first commercial break when they introduce the contestants, and it would have nothing to do with my weird major in university/silly hobby that involves collecting something like bird's feathers or bumper stickers from national parks/the what-i-think-is-quirky-but-is-really-completely-yawn-inducing way i met my significant other.
  3. i would bring cupcakes for the entire clue crew.
  4. i am an expert in potent potables, and excellent at before and after.
  5. i'd always make it a true daily double.
  6. even though i know very little about american presidents, i know that at least one question out of five will be lbj.
  7. i also know that for any answer involving poetry, the question is always "charge of the light brigade."
  8. i'm smart enough to know that when you have twice as much money as your closest competitor, the only sane thing to do during final jeopardy is bet zero.
  9. unless the category is puppies.
  10. unlike when you watch the show on tv, in order to answer you have to wait until alex finishes reading the whole question before you can buzz in, and therefore how well you do has nothing to do with how much faster you are at reading than your opponent.

what boys like... to eat (and drink)
